Transitions (And Not)
I leave for London in a few weeks and already I miss people. I miss people that I’ll still be seeing within the next few weeks. It’s just that thinking about being away from these people (some of whom I’m used to seeing most days out of every week) makes me prematurely miss them because I know I’ll miss them when I’m over there. I’ll never be fully ready to go,...

Jeanne: You know, he and l, we make love.
Paul: Oh, really? That's wonderful. Is he a good fucker?
Jeanne: Magnificent.
Paul: You know, you're a jerk. 'Cause the best fucking you're going to get is right here in this apartment. Stand up.
Jeanne: He is full of mysteries.
Paul: Give me the soap. Listen, you dumb dodo. All the mysteries that you're ever gonna know in life are right here.
Jeanne: He is like everybody but at the same time he's different.
Paul: You mean, like everybody.
Jeanne: Yeah, but even he frighten me.
Paul: What is he? Your local pimp?
Jeanne: He could be. He looks it. You know why I'm in love with him?
Paul: I can't wait.
Jeanne: Because he know...he know how to make me fall in love with him.
Paul: You want this man you love to protect and take care of you.
Jeanne: Yeah.
Paul: You want this golden, shining, powerful warrior to build a fortress where you can hide in so you don't have to ever...you don't ever have to be afraid. You don't ever have to feel lonely or empty. That's what you want, isn't it?
Jeanne: Yes.
Paul: Well, you'll never find him.

I think that if I could be a man for a few days, the first thing I would do is get dressed. What I mean is that men’s clothes really thrill me. Sometimes I wish I was a man so that I could wear a suit and a tie every day (I really love suits, especially three piece suits). You know, a casual suit—maybe something corduroy (I love corduroy). And there’s so many ties out there! And...

I have a friend back in Iowa City who came up with the idea for us to send each other mix cd’s every now and then. The first one I got from him was one of the coolest things—he put it in a case and crafted a cover complete with title and everything. It was a lot of fun. We still send each other cd’s. I sent him one this week full of random Motown hits mixed with flamenco guitar...

Books are bad (because she said so!)
Manager: (pointing to my book laying by my bag) So, you know that new rule about no reading on weekends.
Me: I haven't even read it except for five minutes when nobody was around.
Manager: Well, you shouldn't even have it. You can't read on weekends. That's the rule.
Me: Even when there are no customers?
Manager: Yes.
Me: Why?
Manager: Because I said so.
Me: Ok, well I'm just wondering the reason behind that.
Manager: Because it looks bad.
Me: Right.

Last night I went to this bar/restaurant in Webster to spend time with some fellow writer peeps from school. The bar is this funny old person place that’s got wood paneling and deer heads on the wall. Here’s the thing I love about the English dept. at Webster university: there’s quite a few older students—mothers who are in their thirties—and they’re all...

I don’t feel like going to sleep quite yet because I know that when I wake up I’ll have to make it a really productive day in the academically productive kind of way, unlike what I’ve been doing. I really like having friends like Maddie and Eric and Craig because there are things that we can say to each other that I wouldn’t be able to say in a conversation with other...

I’ve been having a really good week, which is funny because I actually have a lot of work to do. I’ve probably been having such a good time because I’ve been irresponsible and have put off most of the work. But I don’t really care because I’ve spent a lot of time this week researching the things that have interested me lately like Wes Anderson’s filmmaking. His...

Wes Anderson on Charlie Rose
Charlie Rose: You've said this about your films: "I like that my movies can all go on a shelf together and they are connected. I'm perfectly fine if that is the case, that they are of the same ilk in some way. There are plenty of other shelves that people can go to and sit to and I don't feel obligated to run the gambit." What would be that connectedness of your movies? Why would they be on the same shelf?
Wes Anderson: I think that's me responding to somebody criticizing me for making the same movie over and over again, probably. Which I get. And I think it's, you know, it's because I deal with similar themes, but I don't usually think about themes when I'm writing. And there are probably connections among the kind of characters, I use a lot of the same actors over and over again. And I guess there's visual stuff that you can link from one movie to another. I mean, there's a lot of things that I do the same every time, but it's just the way I like it. And I feel like it's a mistake for me not to do it if I feel like I have an idea of what the best thing is for the story. I just want to follow that even if it does mean that people can tell that it's me.

Mumbler
An eleven year old called me a bitch when he was buying tickets. He asked for a child’s ticket, I said, “How old are you?” With attitude he told me he was eleven and muttered bitch whilst looking around at his friends for confirmation. I stood holding his money, glaring and when he and his friends looked up to realize I was glaring I mouthed, “What the fuck?” To which...

lindsaykatai: This is how today went: “You should give up. You can’t make a difference.” “I hope you fail. I really do.” “You can’t even take the good advice of someone who wants to help you.
